Over de workshop
In deze workshop van Erik Kessels gaan deelnemers op zoek in hun eigen ‘achtertuin’. Metaforisch naar je eigen ‘achtertuin’ gaan, kan een verkenning zijn van nieuwe, authentieke en onverwachte ideeën. Vaak maken creatieven alleen gebruik van hun ‘voortuin’. Een plek waar je je voltooide werk kunt laten zien en het verder wordt geperfectioneerd. Maar het is vaak de ‘achtertuin’ waar je persoonlijkheid, onafgemaakte projecten, eerdere en nieuwe ideeën verborgen liggen. Het is in je achtertuin waar je de ruimte hebt om te beschouwen en te reflecteren op de wereld die aan je voortuin voorbij trekt.
Erik Kessels zal de deelnemers begeleiden, de belemmeringen en mogelijkheden in hun werk verkennen en manieren vinden om de achtertuin naar voren te halen. De masterclass begint met een presentatie van zijn werk op het gebied van communicatie en kunst.
About the workshop
In this class/workshop by Erik Kessels, participants will start a search in their own ‘Backyard’. Going metaphorically to your own ‘Backyard’ can become an exploration of new, authentic and unexpected ideas. Often creatives make only use of their ‘Frontyard’. A place where you can showcase your finished work and where it is perfected, but it’s the ‘Backyard’ where often your personality, unfinished projects, previous and new ideas are hidden. Your backyard is the place to reflect and observe your perception of the world which happens in your front yard.
Erik Kessels will guide the participants with their possibilities and obstructions. As a result they will improve their personality in their work.
Bio
Erik Kessels is een Nederlandse kunstenaar, ontwerper en curator met grote interesse in fotografie. Kessels is sinds 1996 Creative Partner van communicatiebureau KesselsKramer in Amsterdam en Londen. Als kunstenaar en curator heeft Kessels meer dan 90 boeken met zijn 'opnieuw toegeëigende' beelden gepubliceerd en de internationale bestsellers ‘Failed It!’ en ‘Compleetamateur’. Kessels is maker en curator van tentoonstellingen als Loving Your Pictures, Mother Nature, 24HRS in Photos, Album Beauty, Unfinished Father en GroupShow. Zijn retrospectief halverwege zijn carrière was te zien in Turijn, Düsseldorf, Boedapest en hij exposeerde onlangs in de SFMOMA. Hij werd door Time Magazine ‘een visuele tovenaar’ genoemd en door Vogue (Italia) een ‘Moderne Antropoloog’.
BIO
Erik Kessels is a Dutch artist, curator and communication designer, with great interest in art and photography. Erik Kessels is since 1996 Creative Partner of communications agency KesselsKramer. As an artist and curator Kessels has published over 100 books of his 're-appropriated' images and has written the international bestseller Failed It! and Complete Amateur. He has taught at several Art Academies (Amsterdam, Milan, Toronto, Lausanne, Düsseldorf). Kessels made and curated exhibitions such as Loving Your Pictures, Mother Nature, 24HRS in Photos, Album Beauty and Unfinished Father. Currently he’s working on a long-term European art project called Europe Archive. In 2010 Kessels was awarded with the Amsterdam Prize of the Arts, in 2016 nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Until 2022 his mid-career retrospective is shown in Turin, Düsseldorf and Budapest and he exhibited recently in the SFMOMA. He was called “a visual sorcerer” by Time Magazine and a “Modern Anthropologist” by Vogue (Italia).
